love at first bite

Fat-free, cholesterol-free, vegan-friendly, nut-free, gluten-free, dairy-free and kosher-certified, I’m officially obsessed with these 50-calorie bags of freeze-dried FruitziO from Crispy Green. A sophisticated freeze-drying process wicks the water out of fresh fruit, leaving behind a fruity essence sealed in a light and crispy chip that’s as addictive as narcotics. If you’ve never tried crispy mangoes, be warned – you have no idea what you’re missing. My only gripe is that they’re not organic. Still, next time I’m stuck flying coach I’m stuffing my bag full of crispy kiwi. And cantaloupe. And Asian pear.

art or snacks?

You’d be a winner if you guessed snacks. More specifically, Annie Chun’s All Natural Savory Roasted Korean Seaweed Snacks. So pretty. So tasty, too. And all those vital micro nutrients, yum yum. Prepare yourselves for a minor food obsession over the next few days  – today I embark upon a juice cleanse and expect to be desperately craving seaweed snacks any minute now.

fishy fast food

Long before there were McNuggets, there were bolinhos de bacalhau, or fish balls; bite-sized quenelles of salt cod mixed with mashed potato that are Lisbon’s answer to fast food.  Eaten hot or cold, as a mid-day snack or evening appetizer, they’re ubiquitous. And delicious. They also go great with a beer. The logic behind it is unimpeachable, too. A high-protein, low-fat snack or a trough of deep-fried McParts? No wonder the people here are all so trim. The secret to the bod must be in the cod.
