fly over: wat phra sri sanphet

Three main stupas – which once contained ashes of the Kings Boroma-Tri-Loka-Nat, Boroma-Rachathirat III and Ramathibodi II – and a scattering of ruins are all that remain of Wat Phra Sri Sanphet, a temple inside the grounds of the former royal palace at Ayutthaya which once served as the family’s private chapel. By chance I happened to catch a plane flying overhead.

live blog: air/craft

Standing at the end of a runway, Jeffrey Milstein captures images of aircraft moments before landing. Carefully positioned and using a high-resolution digital camera he photographs them from below as they streak past at speeds up to 175 miles per hour. A professional photographer, graphic designer, and architect, Milstein’s trained eye and steady hand produces images of pristine clarity, 33 of which are currently on display at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. In this photographic analysis, or typology, the neutral background and precise symmetry focus attention on the design, color and symmetry of each aircraft: razor-sharp lines reveal technological complexity; spread wings evoke the form of birds. The arrayed images bring to mind a scientific study of pinned butterflies. Elegantly distilled, each of Milstein’s super-sized prints seem to pull you into the air, as though you’re going along for the ride.

it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s … oprah

Because having your own girl’s academy, magazine and wholly branded television network isn’t enough, United Airlines unveiled The Oprah Winfrey Show Farewell Season Plane in Chicago earlier this week. In true diva fashion, the Boeing 757  is newly painted from nose to tail with imagery from The Oprah Winfrey Show. Onboard, passengers will notice interiors decorated by Oprah herself  as well as a video welcome from the Queen of All Media reminding you to buckle up.

United will fly the plane on various domestic routes through May 2011, when the star wraps up her long-running talk show.  Until then, passengers are being asked to not tear apart the seats in search of a taste of Oprah’s famous largesse. “Those cushions are flotation devices,” a spokesperson said.  “The FAA would never allow anyone to hide car keys or prizes in there.  Even Oprah”
