We all know how in 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue, and how an Italian in service to the Spanish crown ended up “discovering” America.

But while the U.S. has long designated the second Monday in October as a national holiday marking the occasion, Oct. 12 – the actual day Christopher Columbus and crew set foot in the New World – is seen in a decidedly different light across Latin America.
